Six Imperatives for Rendering Black Lives in Media
Recognize Media’s Role in Perpetuating Social Engineering
To avoid reinforcing solely the dominant culture’s social agenda, storytellers should consider their cultural perspectives, how they portray characters, the impact of their messages, and whether different viewpoints are represented fairly. Authentic Black storytelling can challenge stereotypes, influence perceptions, strengthen cultural identity, and create lasting social and economic value for the Black community.
Consider the Existence and Validity of Different Points of View
Media often reinforces the values of the dominant culture and can overlook alternative perspectives. However, authentic and culturally specific stories can reach broad audiences by highlighting shared human experiences and challenging dominant narratives.
Acknowledge the History of Subjugation and Its Impact on a Traumatized Community.
Media often focuses on Black pain and tragedy, which can reinforce harmful stereotypes about Black communities. Instead, storytelling should provide context for historical and ongoing trauma while also showing Black resilience, family, humanity, and strength.
Focus on Black Community Resilience on Self-Sustaining Protective Factors.
Despite facing adversity, Black communities have developed strong networks of support, resilience, and self-preservation. Authentic storytelling can highlight these protective factors and show how community connections and resourcefulness help Black communities overcome challenges.
Recognize that Authentic Black Storytelling Produces Healthy Outcomes for the Community and the World.
Authentic representation in media can challenge dominant perspectives, promote greater understanding, and create healthier social outcomes. Centering Black voices and lived experiences can strengthen the Black community while contributing to a more understanding and equitable world.
Ensure Black Contributors to Mainstream Culture Receive an Equitable Stake in the Benefits of Their Contributions.
Black culture has significantly shaped mainstream culture, influencing music, fashion, language, food, and other forms of expression. Recognizing and fairly valuing these contributions promotes cultural respect, equity, and shared prosperity while ensuring Black communities benefit from the culture they create.
